Es farà Medea a Tarragona?
FITT - Noves Dramatúrgies
January 1939. Shortly before going into exile, the journalist, and actor, Lluís de Salvador recalls the visit he made in August 1933 to the Archaeological Walk with the great actress Margarida Xirgu, already exiled in 1939, accompanied by her representative, the actor Miquel Ortín, who would end up being her husband, when the former died. They are looking for somewhere to stage Medea, one of the best roles of Xirgu’s career, and had been a great success, a magical night, at the Roman theatre of Merida, in a Spanish version by Miguel de Unamuno. Xirgu, De Salvador and Ortín are transfigured, in the Archaeological Walk, into Medea, Creont and Jàson, the three main characters of Seneca’s classic. The tragic fate of Medea is the destiny of Xirgu, a strong, courageous, pioneering actress, and that of the city of Tarragona. And the mystery remains to be solved: was Medea actually ever performed in Tarragona?
